Gene Ristic Stays Awake on “Night Owl”

Everybody moves differently after midnight.

For Gene Ristic, those hours sound less like an afterparty and more like surveillance of his own life.

The Chicago rapper’s new single “Night Owl” lives somewhere between victory lap and 3 a.m. self-interrogation. Ristic talks his talk, but the record gets interesting when the flexes begin sharing space with heavier baggage—his father’s absence, his mother’s sacrifices, family distance, prayer, distrust and the strange loneliness that can accompany progress.

That makes “Night Owl” difficult to reduce to a typical late-night record.

Ristic isn’t simply telling listeners that he’s awake. He’s explaining what keeps him awake.

Over a murky, spacious backdrop, he sounds comfortable letting contradictory thoughts coexist. One moment he’s watching heads turn and speaking winning into existence; the next he’s acknowledging a wicked world and asking for forgiveness.

That’s the pocket.

There is something lived-in about the song. It doesn’t sound obsessed with proving how Chicago it is. The city exists more naturally in Ristic’s temperament—the alertness, dark humor, survival instinct and refusal to become too comfortable.

And “Night Owl” isn’t arriving alone.

Gene Ristic is setting up a run of new records and videos throughout the fourth quarter, while an upcoming album with producer Uncle JoNH III is also in the works.

If this single is the doorway into that next chapter, Ristic is entering it at an interesting hour.

The city might be sleeping. Gene Ristic clearly isn’t.

“Night Owl” is out now on all platforms.
