A New Riveting Film Sets Out To Spark Conversation About The Cycle of Policing and Violence in the Black Community

The Cycle, the latest film project from director Michael Marantz and his production company Already Alive, has officially been announced to be a part of the 19th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City. Executive produced by Sway Calloway (MTV, “Sway in the Morning”) and his business partner Kelly Jackson (Overdeliver Entertainment), The Cycle will premiere Friday, September 25th in Urbanworld’s shorts program and will be followed by a Q&A with the cast and producers.

The Cycle is a short narrative film that explores the themes of policing and profiling. With a run time just under 12 minutes, The Cycle takes a spellbinding look at the complexities that surround socialized fear, emotional pain, and violence and their ability to create a ripple effect throughout the community.

“We are talking about the cycle. We are talking about things that happen in the past that keep on happening and why they keep on happening,” says director Michael Marantz. “For me a huge part of that is this emotion and this feeling of fear and what fear compels people to do.”

Previous to the upcoming premiere, The Cycle, hosted a screening with Donda’s House in Chicago this summer with hip-hop artist Rhymefest and community members and a Brooklyn screening with cast members and rapper Maino. Producers will announce a full tour later this fall and will make the film available to be used by organizations and colleges as a tool to drive community dialogue.

“Conversation and understanding is the ultimate goal,” says executive producer Sway Calloway. “There is such a divide between law enforcement and people in the community, especially black folks. I felt that way 20 years ago, now 20 years later we are still fighting the same issues.”

The Cycle will show at Urbanworld Film Festival during the Shorts Program #2 Friday, September 25th at 5:00pm at the AMC Empire 42nd Street Theatre located at 234 W. 42nd Street between 7th Ave and 8th Ave. Following the screening there will be a Q&A panel with executive producer Sway Calloway and cast members Ade Otukoya, Kali O’Campo, and Justin Rambert.
