Up until now, details about the Wu-Tang Clan’s one-of-a-king album Once Upon A Time In Shaolin have been pretty scarce, but group member RZA has revealed that the work will be going up for auction online via. Paddle8. Only one copy of the album exists and so far the group have already received an offer for $5 million USD, meaning we can expect some big figures to be flying around at the auction.
The decision to release the album, entitled “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin”, as a one off isn’t just a way of making a quick buck though. According to the group, the move politicises the state of the current music industry and demonstrates the role art plays within commerce. By limiting the supply, they’ve managed to show how much demand their is for their music. “I don’t know how to measure it, but it gives us an idea that what we’re doing is being understood by some,” RZA says. “And there are some good peers of mine also, who are very high-ranking in the film business and the music business, sending me a lot of good will. It’s been real positive.”
